Affordable Honda Hybrid Cars Make The World A Greener Place

Anyone watching the recent Honda Civic hybrid television commercial is likely to want more information. During the commercial, the Honda hybrid driver grows a full beard before he has to fill his gas tank again. As oil prices continue to soar, the possibility of commuting to work for days without spending money on gas is certainly appealing.

Honda's Historic Dedication To Making Green Automobiles

Honda Motor Company Limited is a multinational engineering corporation with headquarters in Japan. For decades, Honda has appreciated the need to produce environmentally-conscious cars. In 1970, Honda made the first engine that met the standards of the US Clean Air Act. Today Honda is the 5th largest auto manufacturer on the globe. Honda remains Japan's second largest manufacturer in Japan and seeks to be on top by introducing competitive hybrids. According to the Wall Street Journal, the Honda Insight is “likely to pose a formidable threat to Toyota...delivering greenness for fewer greenbacks.”

Honda Hybrid Car: Honda Civic

The Honda Civic was originally introduced as a two-door coupe in 1972. Next came a three-door hatchback with basic features such as AM radio, two-speed wipers and a heater. The Honda Civic started as reliable, environmentally friendly choice with later versions offering a sporty design and high performance. By 2008, the Honda Civic was the top selling car in the United States. For the past decade, the Honda Civic has been the top selling car in Canada.

The Honda Civic hybrid gets up to 45 miles per gallon on the highway. Luxurious options are available including leather-trimmed interior and a Honda satellite linked navigation system. The Honda Civic hybrid carries a price tag of around $22,500. The Honda Civic hybrid was named “An Editors Choice For Green Drivers” by Cars.com.

Honda Hybrid Car: Honda Insight

The Honda Insight will be introduced in April, 2009. The Insight is competitive with the Toyota Prius and carries a smaller sticker price. The Honda Insight was introduced as a concept at the Paris Motor Show.

The five-passenger hatchback bears a name previously used by Honda for a gasoline-hybrid-electric car originally made in 1999. The original two-passenger Insight got 66 miles per gallon but was discontinued within two years. The new Insight seats five and has more space. Sage Marie, Honda spokesperson, states, “Honda is committed to taking a leadership role in hybrid technology. The Insight is the first of three dedicated hybrid models the company will be introducing in the next four years.”

Executive Vice President of Honda Motor Corporation, Richard Colliver, proclaimed at the Center for Automotive Research Management Briefing Seminars, “We’re targeting sales of 100,000 units of this new vehicle in North America.”

The Honda Insight will offer comparable fuel economy to the Civic. Honda Motor Company CEO, Takeo Fukui, says, “This new Insight will break new ground by providing an affordable hybrid to an expanded number of customers craving fuel economy and great value.” The Insight is expected to be priced in the range of $18,000.

The Secret Of Honda Insight's Lower Price

Honda Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) is the cheaper hybrid technology used in the Insight. IMA is a parallel hybrid system consisting of an electric motor mounted between the transmission and engine acting as a starter motor, traction motor assist and engine balancer. Because of this innovative technology, the Honda Insight is expected to be the most affordable hybrid in 2009. The new Honda Civic hybrid also uses IMA technology.

Honda Hybrid Car: Honda Fit (a/k/a Jazz)

The Honda Fit was an unsure venture for awhile but is now expected in 2010. In 2006, Takeo Fukui said, “We're not thinking of a Jazz hybrid right now. To us, the Jazz has sufficient fuel efficiency with the current gasoline engine.”

By May, 2008, Fukui decided, “A Fit hybrid is now starting to make sense.” The Fit will use the Honda Insight drivetrain and will have similar dimensions. The four-door Fit will be more affordable than the Honda Civic or Toyota Prius. The conventional Fit has engine displacements between 1.3 and 1.5 liters. The hybrid Fit will have a 1-liter class engine which is currently in development.

Honda Hybrid Car: Honda CRZ

CR-Z stands for Compact Renaissance Zero. The Honda CR-Z is a gasoline-electric hybrid car originally introduced as a concept at the 2007 Tokyo Auto Show. In 2008, the CR-Z was shown in the United States at the 2008 Detroit North American International Auto Show. The production model is in the works and Takeo Fukui promises it will be “sporty, incredibly efficient and inexpensive.” The CR-Z will use the Honda IMA system but the drive train specs are unknown. The car will have four seats and be designed in light of the Honda CR-X. Production of the Honda CR-Z is expected to begin in 2009.

Honda FCX Clarity – A Dedicated Platform Hydrogen Cell Vehicle

The Honda FCX Clarity uses fuel cell technology that runs on electricity, emitting only water vapor and heat. By combining oxygen and hydrogen in a fuel cell stack, electricity is generated to run the vehicle. The Honda FCX Clarity does not take gas and does not need to be plugged in. The driving range for this hydrogen cell vehicle is approximately 280 miles. Available in Star Garnet Metallic, the Honda FCX Clarity seats four. Currently Honda FCX Clarity drivers are geographically limited as hydrogen refueling station options are being developed. The first Honda FCX Clarity was sold to a California couple in July, 2008. Over the next three years, 200 more customers will lease the limited edition Honda FCX Clarity.

Honda promises to be one of the leaders in hybrid vehicle production. In 2007, The Union of Concerned Scientists named Honda the “greenest automaker” for the fourth year in a row because of the lowest overall production of global warming emissions and smog producing emissions. With stylish, dynamic and affordable Honda hybrids on the horizon, everyone will be going green and saving money at the gas pump.
